How to install and set up ezMaster on Virtual Machine

Step 1: Download the latest VMware Player.

Step 2: After successfully installing VMware Player, start the program and click on “Open a Virtual Machine.”

Step 3: Locate and select the ezMaster image file (ezMaster_Rel_v1.x.xx.ova).

Step 4: Once the ezMaster image has been mounted, select: Player > Manage > Virtual Machine Settings.

Step 5: Under the “Hardware” tab, click on “Network Adapter” and select “Bridged: Connect directly to the physical network.”

Step 6: If your PC has more than one network adapter, click on “Configure Adapters” and choose the network adapter that your computer uses to connect to the Internet (WAN). Suggest choosing only one wired LAN adapter. DO NOT select a Wireless LAN adapter or other virtual adapters.

Step 7: Click on “OK” to save applied settings.

What ports should be opened for ezMaster to work?

The following outbound ports MUST be opened in the firewall at the site where the ezMaster server is located in order for ezMaster to register with the ezRegister server.

TCP 80, HTTP port, ezRegister server communication

UDP 53, DNS port, ezRegister server communication

The following inbound ports MUST be opened in the firewall at the site where the ezMaster server is located in order for remote access points to communicate with the ezMaster server.

UDP 1234, Custom port, CAPWAP protocol

TCP 80 (default), HTTP port, Captive Portal

The following outbound ports MUST be opened in the firewall at the remote site where the AP/switch is deployed in order to communicate with ezMaster.

UDP 1234, Custom port, CAPWAP protocol

TCP 80, HTTP port, ezRegister server communication

UDP 53, DNS port, ezRegister server communication

TCP 80 (default), HTTP port, Captive Portal

How do I register an ezMaster to ezRegistration Server?

In order to manage remote devices using ezMaster, users must firstly register ezMaster at the ezRegistration server.

Step 1: In the ezMaster user interface, click on the Global Settings menu.

Step 2: Under Admin Account, fill in the fields and click Apply to register your ezMaster to the ezRegistration server. Take note that a valid email address is required for you to unregister your devices in the event of ezMaster server failure.

How are Neutron devices detected and managed by ezMaster?

All local devices (in the same subnet) will be automatically detected and ready for management in the "Pending Approval" list under Device Management > Device Config in each project.

How do I add a device to ezMaster Device Inventory?

Before managing a remote AP/switch, you must first bind the AP to ezMaster's Device Inventory by ‘registering’ the device. Skip this section if you are managing only local devices or if you are manually redirecting each AP to ezMaster.

Step 1: Once ezMaster has been registered with the ezRegistration server, register your APs and add them to ezMaster’s device inventory by clicking on the ‘Device Inventory’ icon.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Add Device’ button.

Step 3: Enter the MAC Address, Check Code, and Description of the device you want to register using a semi-colon (;) to separate each field. To register more than one device at the same time, enter the information of one device per row by pressing Enter. Click the "Register" button once you are done.

Step 4: The message "Device registration successfully" will be displayed upon successfully claiming an AP. Click on "OK" to proceed.

Step 5: The registered AP will be listed in your Device Inventory.

How do I override the wireless setting when Access Point(s) are in AP Groups?

When Access Points are in AP Groups, only one specific setting will apply to all Access Points in the AP Groups. To override the wireless settings, login to ezMaster, go to Device Management and select Access Points.

Click the Device Name of the Access Point for which you would like to override the wireless settings.

Go to Wireless Radio Settings. In here you can override the wireless settings of an Access Point. (i.e. Channel HT Mode, Channel, Transmit Power, and Client Limits).

Is it necessary to set the correct country in Wireless Radio Settings?

Yes, it is necessary to select the correct country to conform to local regulations. Different regions have different rules that govern which channels can be used for wireless communications.

How do I update ezMaster Software?

Step 1: Download the latest ezMaster software version (.bin) from the EnGenius web site and save to the host computer.

Step 2: Open your web browser (i.e., Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox) and login to your ezMaster.

Step 3: The current version of your ezMaster will display in the "Home" page.

Step 4: Click the Gear icon “Global Settings” (located at the upper left portion of the GUI).

Step 5: Under "Software Upgrade," click "Update ezMaster."

Step 6: Click “Choose File” to locate the .bin file that has been saved on the host computer.

Step 7: Click “Upload” to proceed with the software upgrade.

Step 8: Click OK once software upgrade is done.

Why do I see an Invalid IP in ezMaster?

Invalid IP can be caused by these reasons :

1. AP is unable to obtain IP address from DHCP server.

2. AP set to Static IP but does not in the same subnet of ezMaster’s IP address.

Can I manually redirect AP to ezMaster?

Yes, you can manually assign the ezMaster server URL or IP address from the AP GUI under "Management > Advanced > Controller Settings." Once configured, the access point will connect directly to the ezMaster and it will be automatically detected and ready for management in the “Pending Approval” list.

Can I migrate the controller configuration (database) between an EWS switch, Skykey, ezMaster VM, or ezMaster AWS?

No, this is only possible by manually removing / unregistering the managed devices and manually adding them to and manually configuring in the new ezMaster.
