Troubleshooting

This section lists common issues you may encounter during the installation or setup of the EnGenius ESN904 SmartNIC (Edmunds Lake) and provides practical solutions.

Issue 1: Server does not boot from installation media

  • Possible Cause 1: The BIOS boot order is incorrect.

    • Solution: Reboot the system, enter the BIOS Setup Utility, and ensure the installation media (e.g., USB Hard Disk or the mounted virtual ISO) is set as Boot Option #1.

  • Possible Cause 2: The virtual media ISO is not mounted correctly in the BMC.

    • Solution: Log in to the BMC web interface, open the Virtual Media page, and confirm the ISO shows a status of “Connected.” If not, unmount and re-mount the image.

Issue 2: Cannot access the BMC web interface

  • Possible Cause 1: Incorrect IP address.

    • Solution: Verify the BMC IP address from the serial console using ifconfig. Make sure you connect via https:// if the interface requires a secure protocol.

  • Possible Cause 2: Network connectivity problem.

    • Solution: Confirm that the network cable is securely connected to the dedicated BMC management port and your network switch or laptop. Test connectivity by pinging the BMC’s IP address from another device on the same subnet.

Issue 3: Default BMC password does not wor

  • Possible Cause: The password was changed previously and not recorded.

    • Solution: Contact your system administrator to check for an updated default password. If the password has been lost, follow the hardware vendor’s procedure to reset the BMC to factory defaults..

Issue 4: OS installer does not detect any storage devices

  • Possible Cause: The installer is missing the necessary driver for the storage controller (e.g., NVMe).

    • Solution: Download the appropriate storage driver from the server manufacturer’s support site. During installation, choose Load driver and provide the driver from a USB drive or virtual media. For Linux, you may need a newer kernel or distribution that includes the driver.

Issue 5: Installation fails midway with an error

  • Possible Cause 1: Corrupted installation media.

    • Solution: Re-download the ISO image and verify its integrity using the MD5 or SHA256 checksum (if available). Recreate the bootable USB drive or remount the ISO through the BMC.

  • Possible Cause 2: Hardware failure.

    • Solution: A faulty RAM module or storage device can cause random installation errors. Run the built-in hardware diagnostics from the BIOS menu (e.g., Diagnostics or Hardware Test) to check memory and disks.
